FIGHT NIGHT AT THE TANK AT THE HP PAVILLION
American Metal & Iron Present Top Fighters from Around the World
By Meaghan Boyle
It's Back! Action, excitement and, of course, premier professional boxing matches. That's how American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank began its 2007 campaign on March 29 at HP Pavilion. Headlining the opening night card was 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist and Fight Night at the Tank fan favorite super middleweight Andre Ward (11-0, 6 KOs) of Oakland. Also on the card was light welterweight Jesus "Chuy" Rodriguez (14-2, 5 KOs) of Salinas. Bay Area native Andre Ward took on Julio Jean in the evening's semi-main event. Ward carried the early action, including two big lefts that caught Jean flush. In the second, Jean opened a cut under Ward's left eye by knocking heads but it was the Olympian who landed the majority of punches. In the middle of the third round Ward was in complete control and scored a TKO with 56 second remaining.
The main event featured crowd favorite Jesus "Chuy" Rodriguez and Carlos De La Cruz. In the first round Rodriguez bloodied De La Cruz's nose and trainers had to make quick repairs. Both fighters exchanged blows during the third and fourth rounds, displaying the talents that would take the match a full 10 rounds. Rodriquez swept away any doubt as to the victor when he closed with a flurry that ensured his point victory from the judges in another unanimous decision.
2007 marks the sixth consecutive year that American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank will be held at HP Pavilion. Each year the event gets bigger and better with many top fighters from around the world flaunting their skills against top fighters from throughout Northern California. This year HP Pavilion will host three more events: May 24, September 13 and November 8. All cards are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. (Dates are subject to change.)
American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank continues to score knockout reviews with boxing fans and industry experts alike. The event has showcased past and present champions in the ring, including former WBA and WBC light heavyweight champion Montell Griffin (46-5, 30 KOs) as well as light welterweight and former Playboy model Mia "The Knockout" St. John (43-8-2, 18 KOs) and Eric "Butterbean" Esch 77-7-4, 58 KOs).
Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment (SVS&E) will co-promote American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank in 2007 with Goossen Tutor Promotions. This will be the second consecutive season that both promoting groups have worked together on these spectacular events. In years past, The Tank has worked with big name promoters such as Oscar De La Hoya and Sugar Ray Leonard to promote and serve as the event matchmakers.
It's that commitment to the fans that has allowed American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank to develop more and more each year. Fans that opt to buy full season ticket packages are given special perks to enhance their experience. Regular season ticket holders receive a Fight Night long-sleeve t-shirt (one per account), advance notice of select HP Pavilion events - family shows, concerts, sporting events, etc., and invitations to each Fight Night weigh-in. Exclusive Inside the Ropes season ticket holders receive the same perks as well as admission to the exclusive Chivas Regal Ringsiders Club, free parking at each Fight Night event and admission to each VIP Ring Insights event.
When pressed to come up with an answer to their favorite part of the package, most "Inside the Ropes" season ticket holders will tell you that the VIP Ring Insights scores the biggest knockout. This special thirty minute session gives season ticket holders the opportunity to ask questions, take pictures and get autographs from the biggest names in the world of boxing. To date, guests at VIP Ring Insights have included De La Hoya, Leonard, St. John, "Sugar" Shane Mosley, former Heavyweight Champion of the World Ken Norton Sr., 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, Bert Sugar, Eric "Butterbean" Esch, Al Bernstein, Jim Lampley, Jackie Kallan and Freddie Roach.
