FIGHT NIGHT AT THE TANK AT HP PAVILION
Non-Stop Action for the Fans
By Meaghan Boyle
Boxing is back in the Bay Area! 2008 American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank is bringing back big fights, lots of excitement and, of course, hard-hitting professional boxing matches with a twist. For this new season of AM&I Fight Night at the Tank there has been a new aspect added. It's called "You Be The Judge": the crowd will get to judge the first four undercard bouts and choose their favorite boxer by rounds of applause. The fighter that wins will win a trophy — the AMI Cup — with a $500 bonus.
The last event was held on March 20, where headlining the event was 2004 Olympic gold medalist and AM&I Fight Night at the Tank fan favorite super middleweight Andre Ward (14-0, 9 KOs) out of Oakland. Also fighting on the card as semi-main event was Bay Area native Francisco Santana (8-0, 4 KOs). San Jose's HP Pavilion will host three more exciting boxing events in 2008: June 19, September 11 and November 13. All cards are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. (dates are subject to change).
2008 marks the seventh consecutive year that American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank has been held at HP Pavilion. At every event there are top fighters from Northern California fighting premier fighters from around the world. AM&I Fight Night at the Tank has showcased many past and present champions in the ring: former WBA and WBC light heavyweight champion Montell Griffin (48-7, 30 KOs), light welterweight and former Playboy model Mia "The Knockout" St. John (43-9-2, 18 KOs), and Eric "Butterbean" Esch (77-7-4, 58 KOs). Most recently, making his 13th appearance at the Tank on November 8, AM&I Fight Night veteran Ricardo Cortes (22-2, 15 KOs) defeated Joshua Onyango (14-14, 11 KOs) in the second round by TKO.
This is the third season that Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment (SVS&E) is co-promoting AM&I Fight Night at the Tank with Goossen Tutor Promotions. In years past, SVS&E has worked with some of the biggest names in the promoting business, including Oscar De La Hoya and Sugar Ray Leonard, to promote and serve as the event matchmakers.
AM&I Fight Night at the Tank and SVS&E's top priority is to bring the fans the biggest and best boxing matches in the Bay Area. Fans that choose to buy full season-ticket packages are given special benefits to enhance their boxing experience.
There are many great advantages to being an exclusive season-ticket holder, but the best incentive to join is the VIP Ring Insights. This is a special 30-minute-session during each event, giving season-ticket holders the opportunity to meet the fighters, ask questions, take pictures and get autographs from some of the biggest names and faces in the boxing world. Thus far, guests at the VIP Ring Insights have included De La Hoya, "Sugar" Shane Mosley, former heavyweight champion of the world Ken Norton Sr. and veteran boxing analyst Bert Sugar. The first special guest to make an appearance at AM&I Fight Night for the 2008 season was Angelo Dundee. Dundee made his name by being one of the toughest trainers around, training some of the greatest boxers of all time, such as Carmen Basilio, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Sugar Ramos, Willie Pastrano and George Foreman. Dundee was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994.
