STANFORD FOOTBALL
Red, White and You

It's more than a catchy theme. It's also the participation Stanford anticipates from its fans in 2008. A loud and enthusiastic crowd decked out in Stanford colors and cheering on the Cardinal can certainly turn the brand-new, beautiful Stanford Stadium into something less than beautiful for opponents. You're so close to the action at the cozy 50,000-seat football venue, you might just feel like taking a snap or two.

You'll be able to cheer on a Stanford squad that showed signs of life last year with energetic first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh, who led the Cardinal to victories over national title contenders USC and Cal.

Stanford shocked the world with the win at USC. When Mark Bradford pulled down Tavita Pritchard's fourth-down pass in the left corner of the end zone with 49 seconds remaining and Bo McNally's game-clinching interception made it official a few moments later, a sellout crowd of over 90,000 fans had to face a hard truth: their hopes for a na-tional title were just about over. Harbaugh, Bradford and Pritchard became national media darlings after the vic-tory, and though the 2007 season turned out to be one of weekly surprises, none could top what some called the greatest upset in the history of college football.

"I give all the credit to the players," Harbaugh said after the game. "They played like their lives depended on it."

"I'm going to tell my kids about it," added Pritchard.Several thousand screaming Stanford fans greeted the Cardinal upon its late-night return to The Farm and celebrated the victory with the team deep into the night.

It seemed nothing could top Stanford's crowning achievement, but for a group of seniors who had never beaten fierce rival California in the Big Game, a victory over the Golden Bears could certainly match the feel-ing, if not exceed it, and send that class of Stanford football players off into the sunset as winners.

And fittingly when fifth-year senior Nick Sanchez pulled down his second interception of the contest late in the game to clinch a 20-13 victory over the Golden Bears, another party was on. Stanford's loyal, enthusiastic student section led a charge of fans who rushed onto the field to celebrate with their team all over again.

"Winning the USC and Cal games has added credibility to the program with alumni, supporters, fans, univer-sity staff, friends of Stanford and, maybe most important, the students," Harbaugh said after the season.
